What is faith?

faith

1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.”this restores one’s faith in politicians”

2. strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.”bereaved people who have shown supreme faith

As a child I went to catholic school up until year 10. I wasn’t raised in a religious family how ever I was baptized as a baby and the school at the end of my street I went to was catholic so I guess maybe it was convenient. In school we studied religion but I guess I have come to the conclusion over the years that I am more of an agnostic in my belief.

agnostic

Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God, of the divine or the supernatural is unknown or unknowable.

So why did I send my son to a catholic school? Well again we lived in the same street and it was the same school I went to. My year 7 teacher was still there part time and it seemed like a nice idea.

My best friend of over 20 years that I actually met at that school sends her daughter there in the grade above. It was a sense of community and getting to know your neighbour that I wanted for my son. We don’t speak anymore and I am not sure why? She was dabbling in the same unhealthy lifestyle choice occasionally but now it seems that 20+ years is enough to not even say a word about! I saw her at the local shops last year. She was on her lunch break and as she walked passed me she looked straight through me. It was devastating as I was initially feeling the effects of my entire family turning their backs!

It’s interactions such as this with people you once considered family at one point that really boosts the confidence!! It’s like telling a homeless man, dirty and sleeping in the street to ‘get a job’. Well done world for pointing out the obvious. Any idea what it’s like to live in that mans shoes? I’m sure he didn’t wake up one day and decide to sleep in the street because he had enough of of his comfy lifestyle. There is a lot of mental illness in circumstances such as homelessness. Mental illness is very much a major discriminating factor in almost all facets of life. Besides that he’s dirty and sleeping in the street. Do you think he has his resume printed out and ready to go? No probably not. Not to mention the fact he probably doesn’t feel confident within himself! Where is he going to put his worldly possessions, the only things he has while at this interview? You know the one where he turns up this interview dirty and broken by his situation only to be handed this magical job you so desperately think he should be getting.

That’s right he not!!

Why do we so insensately kick those who are down? Who do we think we are? How about a smile and a good morning at the very least if you’re not going to offer any real assistance or good advice.

This past week things feel on the up. It’s amazing the difference a little bit of kindness can do and how it can do wonders for the sole. I may not ever find ‘faith’ in a sense when it comes to a god but my faith in humanity has definitely been given a boost.

Thank you to my new friend, where would I be had you not stopped to ask the lady mid-panic attack outside of Coles if she was ok? Where would I be had you been 10 minutes later? Thank you to my new family who have opened their home to me for no other reason than they care and want to lend a hand!!

Thank you to my new friends from The Salvation Army.

I am a mother of one, artist and blogger from Australia. I write children’s books and want to introduce awareness education for children in all schools. This is my journey from domestic violence and beyond. Where it will end up is anyone's guess. Share in my story....
